Executive advisory

AI advisory for senior leaders

Make sense of AI. Use it intelligently. Make better decisions about where it belongs.

A private, one-to-one advisory service from illawarra.ai for CEOs, directors, board members and senior executives.

There is no shortage of information about AI. The harder task is deciding what matters, what is credible and what is relevant to you.

illawarra.ai provides practical, considered advice for senior leaders who want to understand AI, use it effectively in their own work and make better-informed decisions for their organisations.

The objective is not to turn you into an AI specialist. It is to give you the understanding, judgement and practical experience to engage with AI confidently—without making it a second job.

The issue is not information. It is judgement.

Senior leaders are being asked to form a view on AI while the technology, the products and the claims surrounding them continue to evolve.

You may be considering questions such as:

  • What should I understand personally?
  • Where could AI genuinely improve my work?
  • Which opportunities are worth pursuing?
  • What should I be asking management, vendors or advisers?
  • Where are the material risks?
  • Is our organisation moving too slowly—or being drawn into the hype?
  • How do I distinguish a useful application from an impressive demonstration?

Generic courses and product briefings rarely answer these questions in the context of your role, your organisation and the decisions in front of you.

That is where a personal adviser can be useful.

Advice shaped around your work

There is no fixed curriculum.

Each session begins with what is relevant to you at the time: a decision, a document, a new capability, a board discussion, a proposed investment or a piece of work you would like to approach differently.

We can work at three levels.

Your own work

Use AI more effectively as an executive tool:

  • Researching and synthesising complex subjects
  • Testing ideas and challenging assumptions
  • Preparing for important meetings
  • Drafting and improving communications
  • Reviewing reports, proposals and presentations
  • Exploring scenarios and strategic options
  • Reducing time spent on routine intellectual work

The emphasis is not on memorising prompts. It is on learning how to frame problems, provide useful context, assess outputs and apply your own judgement.

Your decisions

Develop a clearer view of the opportunities and limitations of AI:

  • Interpret new developments without following every announcement
  • Assess claims made by vendors, consultants and internal teams
  • Compare tools and approaches
  • Understand where human oversight remains essential
  • Evaluate proposed investments and initiatives
  • Prepare for executive and board-level discussions
  • Recognise where AI may change customers, competitors or operating models

Your organisation

Explore the broader implications for the business:

  • Identify credible, high-value use cases
  • Prioritise where to experiment
  • Consider adoption, governance and risk
  • Establish sensible policies and boundaries
  • Build capability within leadership teams
  • Decide when a pilot is appropriate
  • Avoid activity that is fashionable but commercially unhelpful

The focus remains practical: what should you do, what should you defer, and what should you examine more closely?

A candid conversation, without the performance

At senior levels, there is often pressure to have a position before there has been time to form one.

These sessions provide a private setting in which to test assumptions, challenge claims, work through uncertainty and ask whatever needs asking—without an audience and without the need to demonstrate prior knowledge.

You can arrive with a specific issue or simply a sense that you should be making better use of AI.

Both are valid starting points.

Where commercially sensitive information or third-party AI platforms are involved, we will also establish sensible boundaries around what should—and should not—be shared with those systems.

An adviser, not a trainer

This is not a course, a workshop or a technical certification.

The purpose is to help you develop informed judgement and apply AI to real work.

Sometimes that will involve working directly with an AI tool. At other times, the more useful conversation will concern strategy, governance, organisational readiness or the quality of a proposed initiative.

The technology is only part of the discussion. The value comes from applying it in the right context.

How the advisory relationship works

Begin with a complimentary 40-minute conversation

The initial meeting gives us an opportunity to discuss:

  • Your role and current priorities
  • Your experience with AI to date
  • Questions or decisions you are considering
  • Areas in which AI may be useful
  • Whether an ongoing advisory relationship would add value

There is no assumed level of knowledge and no obligation to continue.

Continue at a cadence that suits the work

Paid follow-up sessions can be arranged:

  • Weekly
  • Fortnightly
  • Monthly
  • As required

A weekly cadence may be useful while you are actively developing capability or exploring an initiative. Fortnightly or monthly sessions may be more appropriate once AI has become part of your normal executive toolkit.

The arrangement remains flexible. The agenda is set by your priorities, not by a predetermined programme.

Who this is for

This service is designed for:

  • CEOs and Managing Directors
  • Board Chairs and Non-Executive Directors
  • Company Directors and Board Members
  • Business owners and founders
  • C-suite and senior executives
  • General Managers
  • Investors and professional advisers

It is particularly useful for leaders who want to understand AI personally before asking others to act on it—and for those who value an informed external perspective outside their normal reporting and advisory relationships.

Why illawarra.ai?

illawarra.ai helps leaders and organisations make practical, considered use of artificial intelligence.

Every executive advisory engagement is delivered personally by Paul Middleton, drawing on a background across product, technology, data and AI adoption.

The role of illawarra.ai is not to advocate for technology for its own sake. It is to help you translate emerging capability into clearer choices, useful experiments and sound business decisions.

When you engage illawarra.ai, you work directly with the person advising you—not a rotating team, a junior consultant or an off-the-shelf training programme.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI training?

No. There is no set syllabus or classroom-style programme.

The advisory relationship is built around your work, your questions and the decisions you need to make. Practical instruction is included where it is useful, but it is not the purpose of the engagement.

How much AI experience do I need?

There is no assumed starting point.

You may be opening an AI tool for the first time, already using it regularly or considering its implications at an organisational level. The discussion begins with what is relevant to you.

Will we work directly with AI tools?

Where useful, yes.

We may use AI to explore a live task, improve a workflow, test an approach or examine the strengths and weaknesses of different platforms. The objective is practical understanding, not product demonstration.

Can we discuss commercially sensitive matters?

Advisory conversations are private and handled with discretion.

We will also agree appropriate boundaries around the information entered into third-party AI platforms. Sensitive material does not need to be uploaded to an AI system for us to discuss the underlying issue.

Can illawarra.ai work with my executive team or board?

Yes.

An individual advisory relationship can be extended into executive briefings, board discussions, leadership workshops or broader organisational advisory work where appropriate.

Do I need to commit to a programme?

No.

The first 40-minute conversation is complimentary. Any continuing work is agreed in advance and can be scheduled weekly, fortnightly, monthly or as required.

Start with one useful conversation

You do not need to arrive with a strategy, a list of tools or even a fully formed question.

Bring a current decision, a piece of work, an opportunity you are considering—or simply use the conversation to establish what AI may mean for you and your organisation.

40 minutes. Private, practical and without obligation.
